We would like
to take you for a trip along the river Vistula. Wisła as we call it in Polish
is the queen of Polish rivers, a symbol
of Polish identity and patriotism – is our natural as well as historical and
cultural heritage.
This unique river has been shaped for centuries by the
nature and people.
The Vistula rises at Barania Góra in the south of
Poland in the Silesian Beskids, part of Carpathian Mountains.
It then continues
to flow over the vast Polish plains, passing several large Polish cities along
its way, including Kraków, Warsaw, Toruń
and Gdańsk. It empties into the Gdańsk
Bay of the Baltic Sea.
We will start with music from the mountains region,
then through Krakowiak dance from royal city of Kraków we will take you to
Mazowsze and show you tradition of St. John’s Night or Sobótki, when girls make
crowns from herbs and wild flowers and, having put a burning candle on top, let
them float away on lakes and rivers.
Many Polish legends are connected with the Vistula.
One of the best known is that about Wars and Sawa who gave the name to Polish
capital city Warszawa.
Beautiful, old
city of Toruń is famous for lovely gingerbread but first of all for
Nicolaus Copernicus who was born there.
We will finish our trip in Gdańsk a
meeting place of many cultures and nationalities and the cradle of
"Solidarność" - trade union
movement, whose opposition to the Communist regime led to the end of Communist
Party rule in 1989.
In the end we will ask you to sing along popular song
“Płynie Wisła płynie” – Flowing Vistula flows.
"PŁYNIE WISŁA PŁYNIE"
