Erasmusdays. CEIP San Roque (Spain)

Last Friday, we enjoyed the great opportunity to meet with our Erasmus partners to celebrate and know those activities that we are developing about the water and its importance in our daily lives. In Spain we were working on the consciousness of the importance of water in our lives. We sang and worked on these songs lyrics that tell us about that. We hope you like them. We love them.

Global Handwashing Day. October 15th.

Last Thursday 15th, we celebrated Global Handwashing Day in Torredonjimeno.

Water give us the opportunity to fight against infections and we have a privilege that many people around the world do not have. Opening your tap and get that water 💦 is one of the greatest things in life that we don't use to value.

WORLD OCEANS DAY 2020

We have been doing some work that is linked to the project. We have learnt a lot about Oceans, using the British Council connecting classrooms Life Below Water materials

We linked this with World Oceans Day. The children learnt about plastic in the ocean and made collages showing how plastic affects marine life. They also did some maths work looking at graphs showing plastic production and types of rubbish in the oceans. They wrote poems and articles and some wrote letters to the local MP to ask what is being done about reducing plastic pollution, to the head teacher asking to investigate our school becoming a plastic free school and to some companies, suggesting how their products could be re-used instead of thrown away.
The children have really been inspired to look at their own use of plastics and that of their families.

But How, Mother ?

But how, how can plastic get to the sea,

I’m confused, surprised, how can it be?

So please mother, will you break it down for me

Of course my child, I’ll explain it to you.

Plastic can take years to go away,

So it is stuck with us day after day,

Birds and sea creatures eat or get trapped so there they must stay,

That kills them sadly and slowly we shall say.

Wow, so however hard we try,

Animals will still unfortunately die,

AS other people do not care, so we should shake our heads and sigh,

When they say yes, ok, we know it’s just a lie.

Why o why do people not understand,

That plastic can travel from some land,

Everybody try and use that helping hand,

To pick up plastic which lies under the sand.

So please help, together as one we make a great team,

But now it can be more than just a dream,

That fish and wildlife can stay as the theme,

A little time and energy that's all we need.

PLEASE DO ALL YOU CAN

And remember that Earth is your family so treat it well.

I’m made of plastic

I am made of plastic; dirty and revolting,

My animal friends are dying and still you are not crying.

I try to stay calm but this is not fair,

Stand up for what’s right and actually care.

Look around you; your world is weak,

Be more aware and when you need to,speak.

Stop chucking away what is really harmful,

This is serious, dangerous and not laughable.

Let your marine life be free and live.

Re-use and re-make and be creative.

Reduce the plastic and be aware,

However, soon sea animals will not be there.

Talk about what is truly right,

Don’t be scared to put up a fight.

Help me and the kind life below,

There are many sad things that you may not know.

Plastic is taking over making life mean,

All I want is to be shiny and clean.

Dear Mrs MacLachlan,

I am writing to inform you of the changes we could do to make this school better for our environment .

The first idea I had was to reduce the amount of single-used plastic by sending back the glue sticks to get them refilled. I was shocked to discover that only a quarter of plastic is recycled and in the last 10 years we have made more plastic than the last 100 years . Could you also consider changing the material of our handwriting pens  as it would make a big difference?

Approximately 8 million pieces of plastic find their way into our oceans every day.

5.25 trillion macro and micro plastic pieces floating in the sea.

I suggest our school should be an official plastic free school.

Thank you for reading this and I hope you consider these suggestions.

                                    Yours Sincerely ,

                                        Ashley

Dear Victoria Prentis, MP,

In school we have been learning about plastics in the ocean and it is shocking the amount of plastics that are in our ocean .

I am very concerned about the future ahead of us and would like to put a stop to this. It’s estimated that every year 300 million plastic bags end up in the Atlantic Ocean alone. This needs to stop!

It’s okay to use plastic but we should try and reuse it. Would you perhaps consider making some new rules so we could make a better and happier environment? Perhaps you could think about adding more recycling bins at the beaches and parks. We could all make sure that once we are done with our rubbish and make sure we put it in the correct bin and not leave it on the ground. When children come to school they should be encouraged to use reusable bottles instead of bringing single use bottles. In 2050 there will be the same amount in weight of plastic in the ocean as there is fish.

Thank you so much for taking your time to read my letter. I really appreciate it. I hope you will consider making some changes.

Yours Faithfully,

Olivia

Under the Sea

To celebrate World Oceans Day (June 9th) our children of key workers (aged 5-10) did some under the sea art.

JMW Turner

Joseph Mallord William Turner lived from 1775 to 1851. He rose from very humble beginnings to become one of Britain's greatest painters. He was famous for his paintings of water; the sea, lakes and rivers. His paintings inspired the later work of the impressionists, particularly Monet.
This work was inspired by the Turner presentation on this blog that the Polish children had used. Our children liked the idea of doing the same work as the Polish children. We built on the knowledge of wave painting from our work on Hokusai's Giant Wave. The children used watercolours.
