NEWS FROM POLAND :-)

While pupils in Szkoła Podstawowa nr 11 were choosing their favourite logo and mascot, mothers who were hosting pupils from our partners schools met to have a chat with headteacher Beata Kosicka - Siwak and coordinator Małgorzata Łupicka. It was very nice to remember some nice moments, see the blog and photos and plan next meetings.

The ice cube, the water and their weight.

When someone asks a student who's heavier the ice cube or the same amount of water, the answer will be, "The ice cube! The Ice cube is heavier than an equal amount of water!" With the experiment below, we see that ice is lighter because its volume increases but at the same time its density decreases ... That is why icebergs float in water and ice cubes in our fresh lemonade!

I wondered if this little film might be of interest to people as our next meeting is about science and is in Sicily. It is a virtual reconstruction of a device found in the water south of Greece and believed to be the world's first Analogue computer. Historians date it to about 205BC and think it may be a device described by Cicero and originally made by the Greek mathematician and philosopher Archimedes in Syracuse. It is called the Antikythera Mechanism. Children may be surprised to know that such machines were possible over 2000 years ago.

LEARNING MORE ABOUT OUR PARTNERS

On the Wednesday of the meeting each visiting school set up a stall which was designed to give a flavour of the country. There were flags, leaflets, postcards and books on display as well as work done by the pupils before the meeting. Lithuanian children were tying homemade friendship bracelets in their national colours, onto visitors wrists while English children gave away hand-drawn bookmarks of the Oxford skyline. The Italian stall displayed local crafts and books and the Spanish party dressed in national costume and demonstrated how to use a botijo to drink water. All the stalls also had samples of national delicacies from Lithuanian bread and cheese to Spanish turon, English shortbread and Italian biscotti. All of these and more were enjoyed by the Polish children from the host school who visited the stalls to find out more about their European partners.
